On May 13, 1888, Princess Isabel of Brazil signed the "Lei Áurea" (Golden Law), abolishing slavery — making Brazil the last country in the Americas to do so. She was acting as regent while her father was ill in Europe, reportedly signed with such enthusiasm that the pen broke. The plantation elite were so furious it cost the imperial family all political support, and the Brazilian Empire fell to a republic just 18 months later. One pen stroke that ended an era — and accidentally ended another.
