On April 16, 1972, Apollo 16 launched toward the Moon's Descartes Highlands. During the moonwalk, Commander John Young jumped so high off the lunar surface while saluting the flag that a NASA photograph captured him fully airborne — the camera happened to be at just the right angle to show nothing but empty space beneath his boots. It became one of the most purely joyful images from the entire Apollo program.
